TAWAU: Sabah police are fully prepared to ensure a safe and smooth state election later this month, says Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail (pic).
The Home Minister said Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Jauteh Dikun had briefed him on preparations for the upcoming polls, with nomination day on Nov 15 and polling day on Nov 29.
“The Sabah police contingent currently comprises about 10,000 personnel statewide.
“All leave for police personnel has been frozen, except for those approved on a case-by-case basis,” Saifuddin Nasution told reporters after attending the ministry’s “Inspirasi Madani” programme in Merotai yesterday.
He said if additional manpower was required, reinforcements would be brought in from the Sarawak police contingent.
“In terms of training, police have been conducting simulation exercises and coordination briefings with related agencies, particularly for the task of safeguarding ballot boxes in interior areas.
“The police’s main role is not only to maintain order but also to ensure that voters feel safe and confident to cast their ballots. The Sabah state election must be seen as a celebration of democracy,” he added.
He assured that voters should not be worried about threats, intimidation or any form of pressure, as ensuring their safety is a core responsibility of the police force.
“The police are also tasked with safeguarding Election Commission officers and staff so that they can perform their duties without disruption.
“As the country’s largest enforcement agency, the police are now at a state of full preparedness to face the upcoming election,” he said.
