TITI: The Negri Sembilan polls are a chance for voters to press Putrajaya over rising living costs, says MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong.
Speaking at a ceramah here on Thursday (July 30) night, Dr Wee said voters who were unhappy with the government’s policies could use their ballot to send a message.
He said the polls amounted to a referendum on the government’s record.
“If you are unhappy, use this vote to tell them,” he said.
He said households were paying more since a new electricity tariff took effect. He said a monthly bill of about RM300 last November now came to more than RM400.
Dr Wee added that fuel and diesel prices had also swung sharply, rising steeply before coming down again around the start of July.
He said the switch from the Goods and Services Tax to the Sales and Service Tax and new e-invoicing rules had added to costs for small traders.
Dr Wee said state elections had pushed the federal government to change course before, pointing to policy reversals he linked to the recent Sabah polls. He said a strong showing at the ballot box made the government listen.
He urged Chennah voters to back Barisan Nasional’s Siow Kong Choon. He said he wanted a Barisan state government that included Chinese and Indian representation, not one drawn from a single community.
Wee said Siow, the Negri Sembilan MCA Youth chief and a Jelebu municipal councillor, was a local who knew the area well.
Siow faces incumbent Anthony Loke in a straight fight for Chennah. Polling is on Aug 1, with early voting held on July 28.
