Ipoh cops arrest two for impersonating police officers, demanding bribe

IPOH: Police have arrested two men in their 20s for allegedly impersonating police officers and demanding a RM300 bribe from a motorcyclist in Bercham.

Ipoh OCPD Asst Comm Abang Zainal Abidin Abang Ahmad said the incident, which took place early on Nov 1 in front of a restaurant at Taman Ipoh Timur Baru, had gone viral on the Viral Perak Facebook page.

“The video shows one of the suspects dressed like a traffic police officer stopping a motorcyclist,” he said in a statement on Sunday (Nov 2).

He said investigations revealed that the suspects had accused the victim of modifying his motorcycle illegally before asking for RM300 in cash to avoid being issued a summons.

“The victim, who became suspicious, contacted a friend for help, and the police were later informed.

“Both suspects were arrested along with several items used in the impersonation,” he added.

He said among the seized items were a reflective vest labeled “Bike Rescue,” a cap and shoes bearing the police logo, two motorcycles, a walkie-talkie and several police logo stickers.

ACP Abang Zainal said the case is being investigated under Section 170 of the Penal Code for impersonating a public servant.

“The suspects have been remanded for four days to assist in the investigation,” he said.

He also advised the public not to be easily deceived by individuals claiming to be police officers without showing a valid authority card, and to immediately contact the police if faced with any suspicious situation.
