JOHOR BARU: The Johor government has urged the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to review security and content controls on popular online gaming platforms such as Roblox following a shocking incident in Batu Pahat involving two young brothers.
A six-year-old boy was seriously injured after being allegedly attacked by his nine-year-old sibling in an incident reportedly linked to the online game.
State women, family and community development committee chairman Khairin Nisa Ismail said the case highlighted the urgent need for stronger oversight to protect children from harmful influences in digital spaces.
“We call on MCMC to look into security measures on Roblox and other gaming platforms to ensure they are safe for children. It’s important that our young ones are not influenced by violent elements or manipulated through these games,” she said.
Khairin Nisa said the state government was concerned about the growing risks of exposure to violent online games and the danger of predators using such platforms to approach or groom children.
She also reminded parents to play a proactive role in monitoring their children’s online activities.
The Serom assemblyman said that based on her observations, many parents allow their children unrestricted access to digital devices without knowing the type of content they are exposed to.
“This is dangerous and can amount to neglect, which is an offence under the Child Act,” she said.
Khairin Nisa also said she would visit the six-year-old victim at Hospital Batu Pahat to check on his condition.
She said the Johor Welfare Department is awaiting the outcome of police investigations before any further action.
“Once the investigation is completed, the department will provide counselling sessions to the family, especially the two brothers,” she said.
Police earlier said the six-year-old suffered slash and stab wounds believed to have been inflicted by his older brother, reportedly after a dispute related to Roblox.
The child remains in stable condition under medical care.
Both boys are now under the supervision of the Welfare Department while their parents have been detained to assist in the investigation.
