IPOH: More than 53,000kg of used clothing have been collected for recycling from June to October this year, says Ipoh Mayor Datuk Zamakhshari Hanipah.
He stated that this was achieved through a joint initiative between the Ipoh City Council (MBI), Shell Malaysia Trading Sdn Bhd and Life Line Clothing (M) Sdn Bhd.
He stated that the program, which involves placing recycling bins for used clothes at Shell petrol stations across Ipoh and a few other locations, was a part of MBI’s Local Agenda 21 plan for 2025.
“The effort supports the city’s goal of becoming a smart and low-carbon city by 2030, in line with the Ipoh Doughnut Economics framework introduced in August this year.
“Circular economy means maximising the reuse and recycling of materials before disposal.
“This approach not only reduces pollution and greenhouse gas emissions but also builds a sustainable economy and improves community wellbeing,” he said in his speech during the launching ceremony of the recycle bins at a Shell petrol station here today. (Nov 1)
Zamakhshari stated that 35 clothing recycling bins have been installed within MBI’s operational area, including at nine Shell stations, as well as supermarkets, residential areas, and schools.
During the event, he also announced that Life Line Clothing (M) Sdn Bhd has become MBI’s fifth strategic partner under its Circular Economy Programme.
“May this initiative be the catalyst towards achieving Ipoh Bandaraya Bestari Sejahtera and Perak Sejahtera 2030, while strengthening our commitment under the Doughnut Economic Action Plan to make Ipoh a sustainable and liveable city,” he said.
