GEORGE TOWN: Get ready for a short durian season in Penang, starting sometime in November and expected to last until December.
The state’s famed “King of Fruits” makes two appearances each year — the longer season runs from May to July, while the shorter year-end season typically lasts just a few weeks, drawing both locals and tourists eager for a final taste for the year.
In preparation, the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) has opened online applications for temporary permits for seasonal durian stalls.
The application period runs from Nov 1 to Dec 15, and those interested can apply via ulesen.mbpp.gov.my.
The temporary permit covers stalls set up for the sale of durians during the short season, with fees set at RM1 per day for every 40sqft of space, RM6 for garbage collection, and RM100 for a 20x20 canopy.
According to a statement issued by MBPP councillor Tan Soo Siang, who chairs the Public Health Committee, the online permit system will ensure better regulation and hygiene standards at temporary stalls.
Applicants are reminded that only approved stall sizes are allowed, and all durian waste must be cleared daily. Sellers must also maintain cleanliness, use covered bins, and avoid using polystyrene containers.
Additionally, MBPP encourages cashless transactions and supports the “Bring Your Own Container/Bag” (BYOC/BYOB) campaign in line with the city’s push to reduce single-use plastics.
Foreign nationals are not permitted to operate or manage the stalls, and food handlers must have valid typhoid vaccination certificates.
Tan said council officers would be conducting spot checks, and stalls operating without permits could face enforcement action.
