New lighting, infrastructure upgrades for Kota Kinabalu

KOTA KINABALU: Unlit alleys and shoplots in the city here have been installed with lights, making it safer for pedestrians and vendors.

Incumbent Api-Api Assemblywoman Datuk Seri Christina Liew said this initiative, which began in 2024, is aimed at promoting public safety, beautifying the city and weeding out undesirable activities like alleged drug abuse.

Areas upgraded under the initiative include the open carpark space next to the Kota Kinabalu Central Market, Asia City, Api-Api Centre, Taman Sena, Taman Nibung and Taman Bukit Temasu.

"Similarly, the Karamunsing flyover is now brightly lit at night, following the installation of new LED lights to replace old sodium-powered lights.

“Motorists using the flyover route will be able to see the difference," Liew said in a statement on Friday (Oct 31).

She added that 500 new LED disinfection lamps have been installed at the Kota Kinabalu Central Market, including the garments section, fish market and food court.

"With a brighter, cleaner and more hygienic environment, the improved venue is definitely more appealing to Kota Kinabalu folks and visitors," she said.

As for water supply woes faced by hawkers and traders, Liew said this would soon be a thing of the past as an emergency desalination plant has been set up on the ground floor of the market.

The plant will be used to treat seawater and convert it into potable water in the event of a supply disruption.

Other restoration works completed include the resurfacing of housing roads, widening of drains in housing areas, and repair works on damaged five-footways and back alleys of shops at the Sinsuran and Segama Shopping Complexes, Kg Air and Bandaran Berjaya, Liew added.
