Malaysia calls for stronger cyber defence at ADMM

KUALA LUMPUR: “Invisible” digital threats are just as dangerous as those confronting our maritime zones, says Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin.

In his opening remarks at the 19th Asean Defence Ministers’ Meeting (ADMM), Khaled emphasised the need to give equal attention to the digital domain in the pursuit of regional security.

“We see the challenges in the South China Sea, but we must also recognise that our digital realm is equally at risk. The threats that target our networks and systems may be invisible, but they are just as dangerous as those threatening our maritime zones.

“Whether on land, at sea, or in cyberspace, we can no longer afford to ignore any front of our security. If we fail to invest against these threats, we fail to secure our future,” he said.

He added that non-state actors now possess technologies capable of “disrupting societies, toppling governments, and undermining critical infrastructure.”

“Therefore, the ADMM must move beyond traditional military cooperation. Peace in our seas, in the digital sphere, and in cyberspace is not just Asean’s concern — it is a global responsibility. Within our region, Asean and the ADMM must remain at the centre to lead, safeguard, and secure this region,” he said.

Khaled also expressed appreciation to Thailand and Cambodia for entrusting Malaysia with facilitating their border dispute resolution.

“And to all Asean nations, including our partners such as the United States, I thank you for your continued support for this effort.

“I urge all Asean nations to not only support this peaceful initiative but also to facilitate and expedite the formation of the Asean Observer Team.

“It is our collective hope that peace and trust will continue to grow among us all — for this is more than just a border matter. It is a testament to Asean’s reputation and ability to inspire confidence and resolve conflicts peacefully. In the same spirit, we remain committed to helping Myanmar resolve its internal conflict and return to its rightful place in Asean,” he added.
