KUALA LUMPUR: Asean sees China as a significant partner and promoter of global prosperity, commending the country's comprehensive global initiatives that aim to foster peace, stability, and sustainable development.
Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said China’s vision — reflected through its Global Development Initiative, Global Security Initiative, Global Civilization Initiative, and Global Governance Initiative - underscored the nation’s leadership, wisdom, and commitment to building a better and more inclusive world.
“These initiatives clearly demonstrate that China’s policies are not only focused on its own advancement but also aspire to see other nations prosper,” he said in his speech during the Asean-China Defence Ministers Luncheon on Friday (Oct 31).
Mohamed Khaled said Asean regards China as not merely a significant partner, but a vital catalyst for shared growth and stability in the region.
“As a promoter of global prosperity, China carries responsibilities that extend beyond economic development.
“We hope that China will continue to uphold international law, promote mediation, and help prevent conflicts before they arise," he added.
Mohamed Khaled said the regional bloc also expressed its expectation that China will continue to stand shoulder to shoulder with Asean in safeguarding peace and stability in Southeast Asia.
"Prosperity and security are inseparable and interdependent.
"Regional peace brings shared prosperity and in turn, mutual respect, trust, and lasting relationships that sustain enduring peace," he said.
He said Asean also acknowledged China’s continuous support in maintaining a secure and peaceful region while respecting national sovereignty and encouraging deeper collaboration.
"By working together, we can transform challenges into opportunities and vision into reality," he said.
Beyond the formalities, Mohamed Khaled said Asean ongoing engagement with China is more than just diplomatic partnership.
“This gathering is a celebration of dialogue, trust, and meaningful cooperation between Asean and China,” he said.
