KUALA LUMPUR: The Sessions Court here has sentenced an unemployed man to four years' imprisonment for slashing his nine-year-old daughter in the leg with a parang.
Judge Mazuliana Abdul Rashid imposed the sentence on K. Vejesh, 49, after he maintained his guilty plea during the sentencing hearing on Wednesday (Oct 29), ordering the prison term to run from the date of his arrest on Oct 22.
Vejesh was charged under Section 324 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt to his daughter with a dangerous weapon at a Setapak apartment at 1.30am on Oct 22, punishable under Section 326A of the same Code.
Section 324 provides for a maximum penalty of ten years' imprisonment, a fine, caning, or any combination thereof, while Section 326A permits the court to impose a sentence of up to twice the maximum term upon conviction.
According to the statement of facts, police received a report on the day of the incident that the accused had attacked his daughter with a parang. The victim was then admitted to hospital, where a medical examination confirmed a 4cm to 5cm laceration on her left leg.
Deputy public prosecutor Noor Syafina Mohd Radzuan sought a deterrent sentence, emphasising the vulnerability of the victim and the breach of trust inherent in the offence, while the accused, who was unrepresented, pleaded for leniency. – Bernama
