Wan Saiful’s seating arrangement questioned in Dewan Rakyat following Bersatu sacking

KUALA LUMPUR: The seating arrangement of Tasek Gelugor member of Parliament Datuk Wan Saiful Wan Jan was raised in Parliament today, questioning whether he is still within the Perikatan Nasional bloc following his termination from Bersatu.

During the debate session of the 2026 Supply Bill at the Dewan Rakyat, Khoo Poay Tiong (PH-Kota Melaka) questioned why Wan Saiful is still seated within the Opposition side.

"Tasek Gelugor, as we were informed, was sacked by his party, then why is he still seating at the opposition side? Is he still with the opposition or an independent?," Khoo said.

Wan Saiful then replied that he has submitted an appeal to his termination from the party.

"In the party, we are allowed to submit appeals," he told Deputy Dewan Rakyat Speaker Alice Lau.

Khoo again interjected, asking if Wan Saiful still wanted to remain in Bersatu. The MPs were immediately told to remain silent by Alice.

Earlier, Wan Saiful in his speech raised the state of free speech in the country, following the arrest of blogger Wan Muhammad Azri Wan Deris or Papagomo. The latter was arrested on Sunday (Oct 26), for seditious remarks.

RSN Rayer (PH-Jelutong) interjected and said that an anti-Trump rally was allowed by the government to proceed during the weekend.

Rayer also took a jab at Bersatu, stating that the party "has no freedom of speech," following the party's internal circular that warned members not to engage with or attend events organised by suspended or expelled members.

On Oct 14, Bersatu’s disciplinary board had sacked five leaders, including Tasek Gelugor MP Datuk Wan Saiful Wan Jan, for violating the party’s code of conduct.

Machang MP Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal had his membership suspended for one term while the other four who were sacked are all division chiefs namely; Mohd Azrudin Mhd Idris (Hang Tuah Jaya), Mohd Faizal Asmar (Pengerang), Mohd Fadhli Ismail (Ipoh Timur) and Mohd Isa Mohd Saidi (Ampang).

The members may file an appeal to the party’s Appeals Board within 14 days.

The circular which was signed by Bersatu secretary-general Datuk Seri Azmin Ali was also criticised heavily by Wan Ahmad Fayhsal who said the directive violated the Constitution's guarantees of freedom of association and speech.
