KUALA LUMPUR: Russia is looking to develop better connectivity with the Asean region, says its Deputy Prime Minister Alexey Overchuk.
He said this is in light of the global economic centre shifting towards the region.
“We believe our trade and economic relations can be mutually beneficial,” he said at a press conference on Monday (Oct 27).
The event was held on the sidelines of the 47th Asean Summit and Related Summits in Kuala Lumpur.
Asked if Russia is pivoting to Asean due to sanctions and trade tensions, he said Russia has been under sanctions for 125 years.
“Sanctions have always existed and we do not have illusions about them being lifted,” he said.
“We maintain trade and economic relations while improving connectivity between countries, regions and different economic integration organisations,” added Overchuk
He then said that sanctions simply exist as they are like the climate and always there.
Asked about Asean interest in collaborating with Russia on nuclear energy, he said there is tremendous global interest in small modular reactors.
“Russia is the only country operating one and building another in our country. We also have an export arrangement to build a small modular reactor in Asia,” he added.
He said nuclear power is clean energy that the world needs.
“The advantage is a sustainable source that does not depend on wind power or sunlight,” he said.
“It is a prerequisite for economic growth in modern society. Russia is also a country with tremendous experience in nuclear power generation,” added Overchuk
