Asean welcomes Japan's first female Prime Minister

Takaichi, who is on her maiden visit to Kuala Lumpur since taking office on Oct 21, was seen after the Asean-Japan Summit at the KL Convention Centre.

KUALA LUMPUR: Asean and Japan have pledged to deepen their longstanding partnership in trade, investment and regional cooperation, with both sides reaffirming their commitment to work closely on maritime security, economic resilience, green transition and humanitarian affairs.

At the Asean–Japan Summit, held on the sidelines of the 47th Asean Summit and Related Summits here, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the region looked forward to enhancing its collaboration with Japan under the leadership of its newly appointed Prime Minister, Sanae Takaichi.

"We are honoured to welcome you, and I must say it is remarkable that you managed to defeat some outstanding men — a true testament to your leadership," said Anwar, drawing smiles as Takaichi stood and bowed.

He also added that, "My wife and daughters are truly supportive of you.

"Thank you for being here even as you prepare to welcome President Trump tomorrow.

"Japan is an important partner to Asean, and we deeply appreciate your presence," he said.

Takaichi, who assumed office on Tuesday (Oct 21) as Japan's first female prime minister, made her maiden visit to Kuala Lumpur since taking office.

During her visit, she was expected to meet Malaysian leaders to explore ways to enhance collaboration under the Asean framework, particularly in emerging sectors tied to sustainability and regional security.

Anwar said Asean and Japan have long enjoyed close cooperation in trade and investment, adding that, "We look forward to strengthening this partnership with you."

Several Asean leaders also gave positive feedback after the meeting, with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong and Timor-Leste Foreign Minister Bendito Freitas giving a thumbs-up when asked about their impressions.

Thailand’s Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow said he was impressed by Takaichi’s debut appearance.

"She was very energetic and dynamic. She seemed to be well prepared for the meeting," he said.
