PUTRAJAYA: Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has criticised the United Nations Security Council for its ineffectiveness, attributing this to its own members starting recent major wars.

"Today, the United Nations Security Council doesn’t work. It simply doesn’t."

"Every major war in recent times has been started by countries that are members of that very Council, without consultation, without accountability."

He said this at the Seri Perdana Complex during a joint media conference with Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on Saturday (Oct 25).

"That’s what happened with the invasion of Iraq, and with other conflicts that should have been prevented.

"There is no real global governance anymore - and that cannot continue," said President Lula, as he is popularly known.

Earlier, President Lula was accorded an official welcome at the Perdana Putra Complex in Putrajaya, followed by a bilateral meeting with Anwar at Seri Perdana.

President Lula, who arrived yesterday, is in Malaysia for a three-day official visit, as Guest of the Chair of Asean, in conjunction with the 47th Asean Summit and Related Summits here.

This is the Brazilian president's first official visit to Malaysia since assuming office for a new term in January 2023.
