AMPANG: Police are investigating the assault of a secondary school student by his fellow schoolmates, believed to be due to a dispute involving one of the assailants' girlfriend.
The video of the assault has since gone viral on social media.
Ampang Jaya OCPD Asst Comm Khairul Anuar Khalid said the video was uploaded on Facebook on Saturday (July 25).
He said investigations revealed that the incident took place at about 12.31pm on Friday (July 24).
"The victim was brought by a male student to the staircase area of Block F at Flat Sri Nilam.
"Upon arriving there, the victim was allegedly assaulted by three male students. The suspects slapped him in the face and kicked him in the body," he said in a statement on Saturday.
ACP Khairul Anuar said preliminary investigations found that the assault was allegedly triggered by claims that the victim had disturbed the girlfriend of one of the suspects.
He added that the incident was recorded by another male student before the video was shared in a WhatsApp group and later circulated on social media.
"We are investigating the case under Section 147 of the Penal Code for rioting and Section 507B of the Penal Code.
"Those convicted under Section 147 face up to two years' imprisonment, a fine, or both, while Section 507B carries a jail term of up to three years, a fine, or both upon conviction," he added.
