‘Datuk’ among eight men held over livestreamed brawl

JERTIH: A businessman with the title of Datuk is among eight individuals detained by police to assist in the investigation into a fight caught on a viral live stream on Friday (Oct 24).

Besut OCPD Supt Azamuddin Ahmad said the suspects, all men aged between 21 and 40, were arrested when they turned up to have their statements recorded at the Besut Police Headquarters.

The 36-year-old victim, who lodged a report regarding the incident, was also detained to assist in the investigation.

“We received a report at 1.32am regarding the incident, which is believed to have occurred at about 11pm in front of a house in Jertih.

“Based on the report, a man claimed he was assaulted by a group of individuals as he was live streaming on his phone in front of one of the suspects’ houses.

"During the incident, the victim was said to have gone to the suspect's house to clear up a misunderstanding between them. However, he (the victim) refused to enter the house as asked by the suspect, resulting in an argument,” Supt Azamuddin said in a statement on Saturday (Oct 25).

He added that several of the suspect's family members came out and a scuffle ensued, resulting in victim’s phone being snatched away.

"The victim sustained injuries, including bruises to the back of the head, both elbows, left finger and his back due to the struggle and a fall,” he said, adding that the victim's vehicle was also allegedly damaged.

Azamuddin said all suspects were taken to the Kuala Terengganu Court on Saturday morning for a remand application, and the case is being investigated under Sections 147 and 427 of the Penal Code for rioting and mischief.

He also called on those with information regarding the case to contact the investigation officer, Inspt Mohamad Effie Ezral Mohd Izham at 09-6956222 (ext 5913).

Yesterday, a video went viral, believed to have been recorded by the victim and his wife, who was in the car with their child before the incident occurred.

Among those involved in the incident is believed to be a businessman engaged in land transactions. – Bernama
