Translator needed, so Penang court postpones Thai monk's knife attack trial


GEORGE TOWN: The Sessions Court here has postponed the proceedings of a case involving a Thai monk accused of causing grievous hurt to a man with a weapon, pending the appointment of an interpreter.

Session judge Juraidah Abbas decided on the postponement on Friday (Oct 24) after being informed that the accused, Phra Phumin, 63, only understands Thai.

The court fixed Nov 7 for mention to allow time for the interpreter to be arranged.

No bail was offered during the proceeding.

Phra Phumin is charged with intentionally causing grievous hurt to a 58-year-old man using a weapon at Kampung Kebun Sireh here at about 5.30pm on Tuesday (Oct 21).

The offence, framed under Section 326 of the Penal Code, carries a maximum imprisonment of 20 years, along with a possible fine or caning, upon conviction.

It is learnt that the victim sustained injuries to his abdomen, hand and cheek after being attacked with a knife.

The incident is believed to have stemmed from dissatisfaction after the victim reportedly told the accused to stop begging and leave the area.
