KOTA KINABALU: A villager discovered a weakened turtle on a beach in Kudat on Thursday (Oct 16).
Concerned for its well-being, he took the turtle home and contacted wildlife authorities.
A Wildlife Rescue Unit (WRU) team arrived soon after and conducted a brief check-up on the turtle.
"Though weak, no sign of physical injury was found," the WRU said on social media.
The turtle was then taken to Gaya Island in Kota Kinabalu for care and rehabilitation before it is returned to the ocean.
"Moments like this remind us that one small act of care can ripple into something greater in the life of an animal in need.
"Thank you to the local hero who didn't turn away, showing that true kindness is found in respect and love for all species," said the WRU.,
They thanked their sponsors the Malaysian Palm Oil Green Conservation Foundation, Orangutan Appeal UK, and the Oregon Zoo for their continuous support.
Meanwhile, at Manukan Island off the Tunku Abdul Rahman Park here, a protected Hawksbill turtle species (scientific name Eretmochelys imbricata), laid 123 eggs before returning to the sea on Oct 18.
Rangers collected the eggs for transfer and incubation at the Manukan Island Hatchery.
