PUTRAJAYA: Asean member states should work together to address the prevalence of scams in the region, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

The Prime Minister said this would be discussed at the upcoming 47th Asean Summit.

"I am sure it will gain traction at the summit because it is an issue of concern – not just in Malaysia but also other member states.

"Scam centres are affecting the stability and economic health of the region and is a matter of concern among Asean members," said Anwar during a special briefing with top editors here Wednesday night (Oct 22).

He was asked if Malaysia, as Asean chair, would exert pressure on Cambodia to shut down scam centres.

The Star in its front page report called for Malaysia to leverage its position as Asean Chair to exert pressure on Cambodia to shut down scam centres amid the alarming resurgence of job scam operations in the country,

Recent developments in Cambodia's job scam crisis have led to significant international responses.

South Korea has imposed a travel ban and deployed a task force to rescue its citizens trapped in fraudulent schemes, prompting urgent diplomatic efforts.

Several South Koreans have been repatriated, with some facing legal action.

Cambodian authorities are cooperating by deporting those involved, highlighting the crisis' severity and the collaborative efforts to dismantle scam networks and protect people.
