KUALA LUMPUR: Describing security for the 47th Asean Summit as one of the most complex and challenging undertakings, the police are deploying more than 10,000 officers and personnel throughout the event.
Bukit Aman Internal Security and Public Order (KDNKA) director Comm Datuk Seri Azmi Abu Kassim said a total of 10,212 cops would be on duty to ensure the summit runs smoothly.
“We are prepared for any eventuality, with security being our top priority.
“Most of those deployed are from the Kuala Lumpur and Selangor police contingents, as well as the General Operations Force,” he told The Star yesterday.
Comm Azmi said preparations were now 90% complete, covering all aspects of security deployment for the summit.
“There are only a few minor matters to iron out before the summit begins, but we are on track,” he said.
He said security preparations include tactical planning and strategic deployment of personnel at all main locations.
Coordination with other security agencies, logistics and protocol is also running smoothly and at an optimum level, he added.
“Police personnel are already on the ground to familiarise themselves with their duties and surroundings.
“Their tasks include providing security for VIPs, summit venues and delegate accommodations, as well as managing traffic control, monitoring and intelligence gathering,” he said.
Comm Azmi said police were paying close attention to the safety of world leaders, including US President Donald Trump, Chinese Premier Li Qiang, senior Russian representatives and other Asean leaders.
“We are also cooperating with international and regional security agencies to exchange intelligence and security assessments to prevent any untoward incidents,” he added.
At a press conference at the police headquarters here, KL police chief Comm Datuk Fadil Marsus warned that stern action would be taken against any gatherings or rallies that disrupt traffic or the summit proceedings.
He said police had received intelligence on planned demonstrations during the event.
“We have engaged with the organisers of the rallies.
“Stern action will be taken against any gatherings that disrupt traffic, interrupt the Asean Summit or jeopardise public order,” he said.
Comm Fadil also urged the public to cooperate with the traffic police as several roads in the city centre will be closed and diverted in stages.
The 47th Asean Summit and related meetings to be held from Oct 26 to 28 are the culmination of Malaysia’s Asean chairmanship in 2025, which carries the theme “Inclusivity and Sustainability.
