Teluk Bahang flats flooded in early morning downpour on Oct 20

GEORGE TOWN: A torrential downpour since early morning has inundated parts of Teluk Bahang on Monday (Oct 20).

Among the affected areas was Jalan Hassan Abbas, where floodwaters rose to ankle level, affecting several blocks of residential flats there.

Southwest Civil Defence Force officer Capt Salman Rahimi Manaf said the flooding was caused by the combination of continuous rain and seawater backflow, which led to the river overflowing its banks.

"Monitoring and drainage works are ongoing to ensure water levels continue to recede," he said.

Salman said the situation is under control, without any need to open any temporary relief centres at this stage.

The flood receded at about 1130am when the rain subsided.
