One week for online safety programme, says Fahmi

KOTA KINABALU: Managers and advisers of the National Information Dissemination Centre (Nadi) must plan online safety programmes specifically for parents within a week, says Datuk Fahmi Fadzil.

The Communications Minister said if they failed to do so, their training and allowances would be terminated, adding that the campaign’s focus must be on preventing and limiting underage children’s social media usage.

He added the allowance for Nadi managers and assistant managers was recently increased as a sign of appreciation for their commitment to the community.

Earlier, he advised parents to avoid using gadgets as substitutes for educating and spending time with their children.

Fahmi said parents must play active roles in monitoring what their children watch and consume on social media.

“When children are given gadgets, phones or tablets, it is the duty of parents to know what their children are watching,” he stressed.

He said his ministry will continue to monitor cyber safety activities at the community level so that people are more alert to the dangers of social media towards children.
