Three men held after RM150,000 cannabis haul in Penang and Kedah

BALIK PULAU: Police have detained three men following the seizure of 49.38kg of compressed cannabis worth about RM150,000 during several raids in Penang and Kedah.

Balik Pulau OCPD Asst Comm Sazalee Adam said the first raid took place at Persiaran Pantai Jerjak last Friday (Oct 10), where two men were arrested at about 9pm in a parking lot.

“During the operation, the suspects resisted arrest and scuffled with police officers as they tried to flee,” he told a press conference at the Balik Pulau police headquarters on Thursday.

ACP Sazalee said officers found 65 compressed packages of cannabis weighing 49.38kg, with an estimated street value of RM153,078 — enough to supply about 98,000 addicts.

Following the arrests, police detained another man in Sungai Petani believed to be linked to the same syndicate.

“Initial investigations revealed the drugs were smuggled in from a neighbouring country by land. The syndicate is believed to have been active since September,” he said.

Urine tests showed all three suspects tested positive for drugs. Police also seized two vehicles valued at about RM23,500 from them.

The suspects, aged between 27 and 39, have been remanded for seven days from Oct 11 to Oct 17 to assist investigations under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
