Traffic chaos: Klang Valley hit with sudden power outage. (
PETALING JAYA: Scenes of sudden darkness and stalled traffic were shared on social media as parts of the Klang Valley and Johor Baru were hit by a widespread power outage.
On X, user @inessukamakan posted, “Anyone else staying in PJ having a power outage? Our whole neighbourhood kena”, while another user, @maizatulnatrah.a, joked on Threads, “Satu PJ blackout... yeayy balik awal (the whole of PJ hit by blackout...yay, go home early)”.
Photos and videos circulating online showed dark shopping malls, halted escalators and non-functioning traffic lights in several areas.
Major malls such as Mid Valley Megamall, The Exchange TRX, Sunway Velocity and Pavilion Damansara Heights were among those affected.
Facebook user Natalie Lim Mei Yi wrote, “Segambut area of Taman Prima Impian blackout, traffic light also no light”, while another user, Jia Yee, said, “Luckily there are two brothers willing to stop their bikes to order everyone around #kepong”, referring to motorists helping direct traffic.
Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) later confirmed that the power outage was caused by a disruption at the Edra Melaka Power Plant, the country’s largest combined-cycle gas-fired power facility.
In a statement, TNB said electricity supply was being restored in stages, with power already back in several areas including Damansara City, Sri Hartamas, Danau Desa, SPPK Cheras, Ampang, Bukit Jalil, Sri Damansara, Kota Puteri and Pasir Gudang Darat as at 5.30pm yesterday.
TNB urged affected consumers to report outages by calling 15454, via its SARA Chatbot at www.mytnb.com.my, by sending a private message to its TNBCareLine Facebook page, a direct message to @Tenaga_Nasional on X or by emailing tnbcareline@tnb.com.my.
