PETALING JAYA: A power outage affected numerous areas across the Klang Valley and Johor Baru on Wednesday (Oct 15), prompting residents to flock to social media to report disruptions and share updates.
In a thread on X (formerly known as Twitter), user @inessukamakan said “Anyone else staying in PJ having a power outage? Our whole neighbourhood kena”
Many had also shared information on which areas are facing outages in the replies of the thread.
Some, however, were more light-hearted in their response, joking that it was a good opportunity to go home. Threads user @maizatulnatrah.a shared that with the blackout, she and many others were able to go home early. “satu PJ blackout.. yeayy balikk awal (return early)”
Major shopping malls were among the locations impacted, including Mid Valley Megamall, The Exchange TRX, Sunway Velocity, and Pavilion Damansara.
Threads user @tyraramdzan, shared photos of the blackout in Mid Valley Megamall, and said: “Mid valley blackout. Escalator and some automatic doors cannot be used.”
A few Internet user pointed out how dangerous the situation could be, especially with an influenza outbreak.
The outage also caused disruptions on the roads, with drivers reporting that traffic lights have stopped working in several areas.
Facebook user Natalie Lim Mei Yi said, “Segambut area of Tmn Prima Impian blackout, traffic light also no light.”
Another Facebook user, using the handle Jia Yee, shared that while traffic lights weren’t working during the outage, there were a few people who stopped and helped direct traffic on the road in Kepong.
“Luckily there are two brothers willing to stop their bikes to order everyone around #kepong,” she said in her post.
In a statement posted on the TNBCareLine Facebook page Wednesday evemomg, TNB said the power outages were caused by an incident at the Edra Melaka Power Plant (EMPP).
As at 5.30pm Wednesday, TNBCareLine said power had already been restored to the following areas - Damansara City, Sri Hartamas, Danau Desa, SPPK Cheras, Ampang, Bukit Jalil, Sri Damansara, Kota Puteri and Pasir Gudang Darat.
