Serve cendol, not alcohol during flights, say Opposition MPs

KUALA LUMPUR: Traditional desserts or drinks such as "cendol" should be served in flight instead of alcoholic drinks, proposed opposition MPs in Parliament.

The suggestion was made by Mohd Misbahul Munir Masduki (PN-Parit Buntar) during debates on Budget 2026 in Dewan Rakyat on Tuesday (Oct 14).

"There is no necessity to serve alcohol to attract foreign tourists on our planes.

"What is wrong with serving them traditional drinks such a cendol, air bandung or ABC and such instead of alcohol," he said.

Muhammad Ismi Mat Taib (PN-Parit), who allowed Mohd Misbahul to interject in his debate, agreed with the suggestion.

He said that the majority of passengers on a flight do not drink.

"Why should we cater to the minority who drink alcohol?" he said, adding that alcohol consumption is forbidden in most religions as a negative behaviour.

Earlier, Muhammad Ismi called to question the serving of alcohol at the recent 90th anniversary school celebration in Ipoh.

He described the event as a "pesta arak" (alcoholic feast), which should not have happened at the school, which is an education centre.
