Singer Salamiah kept cancer a secret from family

ALTHOUGH her cancer is in remission, the memory of the struggle against the disease remains etched in her heart, says singer Salamiah Hassan, Utusan Malaysia reported.

“I had breast cancer in my 40s and now I’m 74. I’ve been a cancer fighter for 34 years of my life,” she said.

A private person, Salamiah admitted to keeping her illness a secret from her family.

“I didn’t tell anyone, not even my siblings and children. I kept it a secret because I couldn’t bear to see people cry in front of me.

“I don’t want pity. When people cry in front of me, my spirit drops and makes me feel weak,” she said.

She also underwent chemotherapy in secret.

Despite facing great trials, her passion for the arts never waned, and she continued to perform on stage.
