Kelantan cops open probe over Israeli flag on display at pro-Palestine rally

KOTA BARU: Kelantan police have initiated an investigation into the 500 Solidarity Voyage for Gaza programme on Friday (Oct 10), which involved the display of Israeli flags, Sinar Harian reports.

Kelantan police chief Comm Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat told the Malay language daily that although it was merely a reenactment related to the Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF) volunteers, the investigation is being conducted under Section 3(1) of the National Emblems (Control of Display) Act 1949.

"Displaying any national emblem without approval, such as the Israeli flag, is an offence," he said on Sunday (Oct 12).

He advised the public not to display the Israeli flag during protests, even if the intention is to condemn it, to avoid misunderstandings that could cause public concern.

Sinar Harian Online had earlier reported that the action by the organisation Anak Muda Bangkit Malaysia, which involved hoisting the Israeli flag during the programme, was merely a gimmick as part of a reenactment involving GSF volunteers.

The programme, co-organised with the Sri Tanjung Floating Market Community, received backlash and various opinions on social media for featuring a boat flying the Zionist regime's flag.

According to programme director Mohd Khairul Hafiz Hassan, the scenario was purely a simulation without any other intention or to offend any party.
