PETALING JAYA: Malaysia remains steadfast in building sustainable, inclusive and resilient cities while driving housing reforms, says Nga Kor Ming.

The Housing and Local Government Minister said that under the 12th Malaysia Plan, the government had achieved 98.8% of its target to build 500,000 affordable homes as of August this year.

“This milestone brings us closer to realising the dream of home ownership for more Malaysians, especially the younger generation.

“On behalf of the ministry, I thank all industry players for helping the country deliver more quality and affordable homes,” he said at FIABCI-Malaysia’s 50th Anniversary Golden Jubilee celebration last night.

Nga said the ministry had revived 1,260 stalled or abandoned private housing projects worth RM121bil over the past three years, restoring hope to nearly 151,000 families.

“One example is the Residensi Hektar Gombak project, where 2,400 homebuyers can look forward to receiving their keys when the Certificate of Completion and Compliance is issued by 2027,” he said.

He added that new policies and major reforms would be introduced under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) to enhance liveability in communities nationwide.

Nga said he had directed ministry officers to step into the field weekly to “see, feel and listen” to ensure that progress was real, not merely reported.

“We completed 6,611 public infrastructure projects last year alone, from markets and town halls to public toilets and drainage systems,” he added.

He also said Malaysia’s international competitiveness ranking had risen 11 spots from 34th to 23rd, making it the world’s most improved country, according to the IMD World Competitiveness Index.

“This is proof that reform works. With determination, perseverance and a stable government, Malaysia will regain its rightful place,” he said.

Nga said the 13MP would push wider adoption of modern construction technologies such as the Industrialised Building System and Building Information Modelling to speed up housing delivery, improve quality and reduce costs, particularly in achieving the goal of one million affordable homes in 10 years.

The plan will also integrate transit-oriented development concepts into future housing projects to improve accessibility, create jobs and ease congestion in city centres.

“This ambition can only be realised when the public sector, industry players, professionals and academia work together to innovate, invest and deliver,” he added.

Acknowledging FIABCI-Malaysia’s role, Nga said the organisation’s awards, research and forums had advanced excellence in real estate.

“I call on FIABCI-Malaysia to continue partnering with our ministry to make these goals a success,” he said.

He also congratulated FIABCI-Malaysia president Dr Yu Kee Su, who will become FIABCI world president in 2027.

Yu said the real estate industry must embrace change and lead with innovation to stay relevant amid rapid transformation.

“To succeed, we must not only adapt but also lead through sustainability, innovation, next-generation leadership and global connectivity,” he said.

He said FIABCI-Malaysia’s 50-year journey reflected resilience and service to the industry.

The event also recognised the Top 5 Malaysian Property Award winners – Sime Darby Property Bhd, Malaysian Resources Corporation Bhd, Hap Seng Land, YTL Land & Development Bhd, and Sunway Property and SP Setia.

It also recognised the Top 5 FIABCI World Prix d’Excellence Awards Malaysian winners – Sunway Property Bhd, ParkCity Group, Hap Seng Land, YTL Land & Development Bhd, as well as Sime Darby Property and SP Setia.

Also present were FIABCI-Malaysia Golden Jubilee Celebration organising chairman Datuk Dr Jennifer Low, FIABCI world president Antonio Campagnoli, FIABCI-Malaysia honorary president Datuk Alan Tong Kok Mau and Star Media Group group chief executive officer Chan Seng Fatt.
