KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has urged relevant parties to seize the opportunity to move towards a comprehensive and enduring peace in Gaza, amid reports of progress in ceasefire negotiations.
The Prime Minister said the development offers a semblance of hope after months of unbearable suffering and devastation in the enclave.
“I welcome reports of progress in negotiations for a ceasefire in Gaza. Every effort that can bring an end to the violence and protect innocent lives must be pursued with sincerity and urgency,” he said in a Facebook post.
International media reports said the Palestinian group Hamas announced that it has agreed to the first phase of US President Donald Trump’s Gaza ceasefire plan.
Malaysia, Anwar said, will not waver in standing up for the truth and will continue to stand firm with the international community in opposing the atrocities committed by the Zionist regime against the people of Gaza. The Prime Minister said along with the international community, Malaysia will continue to demand that humanitarian aid be delivered immediately to the oppressed people of Gaza.
He said Malaysia will also continue to strengthen solidarity with friendly nations, the Islamic world and the global humanitarian bloc to realise aid missions and pave the way for lasting peace, with the ultimate goal of establishing a free, sovereign and dignified State of Palestine.
“As long as Gaza continues to be bombarded and desecrated, we will not remain silent. Instead, our voices will continue to resonate in the streets, on the world stage and in every Malaysian’s heart,” he said, Bernama reported.
The Prime Minister shared how deeply moved he was by the sea of people who gathered in solidarity with Palestine on Wednesday night.
“I was truly touched to see the crowd who came with hearts full of love and courage. They came not because they were forced, but because of their conscience, rejecting tyranny and demanding justice.
“This is the true face of Malaysia, a principled nation with a big heart, unwilling to allow oppression to prevail,” he said.
The rally was held to celebrate the safe return of 23 Malaysian humanitarian activists from the Global Sumud Flotilla mission.
They were among those detained by Israeli forces on Oct 2 while en route to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza.
