MELAKA: A 48-year-old Egyptian man, who has a Malaysian wife, claimed trial at a Magistrate’s Court in Ayer Keroh here to a charge of drug abuse.
The plea of the accused, Hosam Mohamed Mahmoud, was recorded before Magistrate Sharda Shienha Mohd Suleiman on Tuesday (Oct 7).
According to the charge sheet, the accused was alleged to have self-administered a dangerous drug, identified as 11-Nor-Delta-9-Tetrahydrocannabinol-9-Carboxylic Acid (THC).
He had allegedly committed the offence in the restroom of the Narcotics Investigation Department office at the Melaka Tengah police headquarters at about 7pm on Oct 4.
If convicted, the accused may be fined up to RM5,000 or imprisoned for up to two years, under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which is punishable under Section 15(1) of the same Act.
The offence is also read together with Section 38B of the same Act, which provides for mandatory supervision of not less than two years and not more than three years, upon conviction.
No bail was granted after the court found that the accused’s passport didn't contain a valid record of entry into the country.
The court also fixed Nov 19 as the next mention date.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Wan Abdullah Mohd Rodzlad prosecuted while the accused was unrepresented.
