KOTA KINABALU: Parti KDM deputy-president Datuk Wetrom Bahanda is set to take on Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) secretary- general Datuk Julita Mojungki for the Matunggong seat in Sabah’s northern Kota Marudu.
Wetrom, who is Bandau assemblyman and Kota Marudu MP, disclosed that he is moving from his current state seat to Matunggong, a seat held by Julita for two terms.
Announcing this when launching the KDM election machinery for the Matunggong, Bandau and Tandek state constituencies, Wetrom said his decision to move was because the people in Matunggong wanted a change.
“It is not an easy task,” he told the machinery.
In the 15th General Election, Wetrom defeated PBS president Datuk Seri Dr Maximus Ongkili to win the Kota Marudu parliament seat.
KDM, which is part of the Federal Government, is opposition to Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS), whose partners include PBS.
It is eyeing to contest at least 36 of the 73 state seats in the coming state polls.
Wetrom, who is part of the heavyweight ethnic Rungus political family in Kota Marudu, won the Bandau seat on Perikatan Nasional’s ticket in 2020 but left to join the native-based KDM, a Warisan breakaway.
Wetrom’s younger brother Verdon, who is an Independent Kudat MP, is also heading the Independent movement dubbed the Black Wave in the coming state election.
Their sister Datuk Redonah is Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah Wanita chief and political secretary to Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor. She is tipped to be GRS’ choice for the Bandau seat.
