SUBANG: The Subang Air Base continues to serve as a strategic backbone of the nation, ensuring the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) maintains its critical airlift capability for both defence and humanitarian missions.

RMAF chief Jeneral Datuk Seri Muhamad Norazlan Aris said that since its establishment 40 years ago, the base has been the nation’s main hub for strategic transport aircraft, including the A400M and C130, and has played a key role in numerous high-impact missions that have brought hope to the people.

“Whenever a transport mission is required, whether delivering humanitarian aid abroad or supporting domestic security operations, Subang Air Base is the centre of preparation.

“Aircraft are deployed and personnel mobilised from here to carry out their duties,” he told a press conference after officiating the RMAF Open Day in conjunction with the 40th anniversary of Subang Air Base yesterday.

He said that almost every week, the base handles logistical flights, including disaster relief operations and deployment of field hospitals.

“Logistics missions are conducted at least twice a week, and this excludes special assignments alongside the army and navy. Its role is crucial, as almost all transport missions originate from Subang,” he said.

Despite being four decades old, said Jen Muhamad Norazlan, the base remains highly relevant due to its strategic location near the capital and the suitability of the aircraft stationed there.

“This base is a national strategic asset. It is not only an operational hub but also a second home for personnel who are always ready to be deployed at a moment’s notice for the nation’s benefit,” he said.

Subang Air Base commander Brig-Jen Yusri Jamari, meanwhile, said the Open Day provided the public with an opportunity to view the RMAF’s capabilities up close.

“Previously, the public could only observe from a distance. This time, they, and aspiring pilots interested in joining the force, can interact directly with RMAF personnel and their families,” he said.

The event received an enthusiastic response, with visitor numbers expected to reach 50,000 over the two days.

“Today alone, 30,000 visitors attended, and tomorrow we anticipate another 20,000 filling the exhibition and activity areas,” Yusri said.

He said the event not only showcased defence assets but also underscored the base’s vital role in national security and the importance of strengthening ties between the military and the community.

“This base exists because of national security. The people must understand that safeguarding the nation is not the sole responsibility of the RMAF; it is a shared mandate for all Malaysians. The military and the people are inseparable,” he said.

The Subang Air Base was established in 1985 on a former oil palm plantation opposite the Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport and was originally known as RMAF Subang.
