NGO: Blocking aid convoy heartless, will prolong suffering in Gaza

KUALA LUMPUR: A non-governmental organisation has expressed grave concern and disappointment over the interception of the Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF), which was on a mission to deliver vital humanitarian aid to Palestinians.

United Nations Association of Malaysia (Unam) president Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed said the Palestinian people, particularly in Gaza, had endured horrendous suffering, deprivation, starvation and violence for almost two years.

He said the flotilla’s mission was a peaceful, non-violent and humane gesture to provide desperately needed relief.

“It is commendable that Malaysian volunteers were part of this global initiative. Unfortunately, those opposed to the mission have acted with impunity, heartlessness and savagery,” he said in a statement yesterday, Bernama reported.

Mustapa said the Unam governing council called on the international community to make every effort to ensure the success of the GSF project, which enjoyed overwhelming support worldwide.

“A failure to act promptly to ensure the speedy delivery of essential supplies to the Palestinian people would only prolong the dire and catastrophic situation prevailing there,” he added.

The GSF, comprising over 500 activists from more than 40 countries, including Malaysia, sailed towards Gaza as a symbol of solidarity.

The flotilla was carrying crucial food and medical supplies, bearing a message of peace that demanded an end to the war and famine, and the immediate opening of humanitarian corridors to Gaza.
