KLANG: The Raja Muda of Selangor, Tengku Amir Shah, is officially off the list of Malaysia’s most eligible bachelors.
The 35-year-old Crown Prince wed Datin Paduka Seri Afzaa Fadini Abdul Aziz, 32, in a private akad nikah ceremony at Istana Alam Shah here yesterday.
The event was witnessed by Selangor Ruler Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, Tengku Permaisuri Selangor Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin, members of the Selangor royal family, the bride’s family, relatives and guests.
An 11-gun salute was fired at 10.05am by the 41st Ceremonial Battery unit of the Royal Artillery Regiment to mark the occasion.
Soon after, Sultan Sharafuddin conferred the Darjah Kebesaran Kelas Pertama Seri Paduka Mahkota Selangor on his daughter-in-law, which carries the title Datin Paduka Seri.
Earlier, Tengku Amir Shah, clad in a white baju Melayu, arrived at the palace in a Rolls-Royce from the Sultan Abdul Aziz Royal Gallery at around 9.30am in a grand procession.
Some 3,000 people lined the route to wave and congratulate him as the motorcade, escorted by an entourage of security personnel and palace dignitaries, slowly made its way to the palace.
The motorcade was flanked on both sides by male attendants bearing symbolic royal regalia, including the payung ubur-ubur kuning (royal yellow umbrella), spears, bunga manggar (decorative palm-like flowers) and trays of ceremonial items.
A kompang troupe accompanied the procession, adding to the grandeur of the occasion.
Tengku Amir Shah was installed as heir to the Selangor throne on May 3, 2002, at the age of 11 and was officially proclaimed Raja Muda in October 2016.
Born in San Francisco, in the United States, on Dec 12, 1990, he is the only son of Sultan Sharafuddin and his former wife Che Puan Nur Lisa Idris Abdullah.
He received his early education at the Alice Smith School in Kuala Lumpur before completing his A-Levels at Wellington College in the United Kingdom, followed by a degree in Ecology and Environmental Biology from Leeds University.
A graduate of the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, Tengku Amir Shah was commissioned as Leftenan Muda in the 17th Battalion of the Royal Malay Regiment at Terendak Camp.
In 2017, he earned the maroon beret and Honorary Parachutist Wings, and was promoted to Kaptain in 2020.
He is the founder and executive president of the Selangor Youth Community, president of the Football Association of Selangor, chairman of the Selangor Football Club and life commodore of the Royal Selangor Yacht Club.
He also serves as royal patron to several organisations including Cheshire Home Selangor, Yayasan Raja Muda Selangor, Invest Selangor, Children’s Protection Society, the Water Air Food Awards and the World Corporate Golf Challenge.
An outdoor enthusiast, the Crown Prince enjoys sailing, tennis, paddle tennis, cycling and hiking, among others.
He has scaled Mount Kinabalu and Mount Kilimanjaro, and is a regular participant in the Raja Muda Selangor International Regatta.
Born on April 11, 1993 at Pantai Hospital in Kuala Lumpur, Afzaa Fadini is the third child and only daughter of Datuk Abdul Aziz and Datin Rosmawati Ismail.
A former contributor to The Star, in which she wrote on rainforest conservation and sustainability, Afzaa Fadini completed her early education at Garden International School before pursuing A-Levels at St George’s School, Ascot, United Kingdom.
She holds a BA in Development Studies & Economics from the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, and a MA in Sustainable Cities from King’s College London.
She is also a certified arborist with the International Society of Arboriculture.
Afzaa Fadini has volunteered with Free Food Society on food security efforts for indigenous communities and was involved in human rights advocacy with Amnesty International.
