THE number of students applying to enter the prestigious Foon Yew High School, the independent Chinese school with the most students in Malaysia, has dropped by nearly a quarter when compared to last year, reported Sin Chew Daily.
School chairman Tong Sing Chuan noted that only 3,598 students applied to take the entrance exam to join this year, a 22% drop from 4,618 last year.
Of the 3,598 students who sat the entrance exam, 1,256 applied to the Johor Baru branch, 1,273 to the Kulai branch, and 1,069 to the Bandar Seri Alam, Masai, branch.
Tong added that they were also facing stiff competition from local international schools as well as schools in Singapore that were recruiting the brightest young minds in Malaysia, which contributed to the drop in applicants.
He said these were challenges all independent Chinese schools faced in the country and that they should work harder to make themselves more appealing to the next generation of students.
