Policeman killed in three-vehicle crash near Gerik

IPOH: A police officer has been killed and two others injured in an accident involving two lorries and a car at KM85.3 on the Kuala Kangsar-Pengkalan Hulu Road, near Kampung Tawai in Gerik.

Gerik police chief Supt Abdul Samad Othman said the 1.50am incident on Wednesday (Oct 1) involved a lorry hauling logs, a trailer carrying fertiliser and a car driven by the policeman.

"Preliminary investigations found that the fertiliser-laden trailer lorry, driven by a 23-year-old man from Kuala Kangsar heading towards Gerik, went out of control before skidding and colliding with the right side of the log-laden trailer driven by a 59-year-old man coming from the opposite direction.

"As a result of the collision, the lorry carrying fertiliser veered into the opposite lane and struck the car driven by a 42-year-old policeman from the Gerik police headquarters," he said in a statement on Wednesday.

He said that the policeman was confirmed dead at the scene and the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987. – Bernama
