Eatery worker claims trial to DUI charge

MELAKA: A 30-year-old restaurant worker has claimed trial to a charge of driving under the influence of drugs, causing injury to five other road users.

Anuar Baharin's plea of not guilty was recorded before Magistrate Sharda Shienha Mohd Suleiman in Ayer Keroh on Monday (Sept 29).

According to the charge sheet, the accused, who was driving a four-wheel-drive (4WD) vehicle, tested positive for methamphetamine in a preliminary urine screening.

The alleged offence occurred at 6.35am on Thursday (Sept 25) along the Alor Gajah-Melaka Tengah-Jasin (AMJ) Highway at Malim, in the Melaka Tengah district.

He was charged under Section 44(1A)(a) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which carries a maximum jail term of up to 10 years, a fine of not more than RM50,000, and disqualification from driving for at least 10 years, upon conviction.

The court granted bail of RM5,000 with one surety, ordered the suspension of the accused’s driving licence pending disposal of the case, and fixed Nov 4 as the next mention date.

Last week, a dashboard camera recording of the incident went viral, showing a 4WD crashing into several vehicles at a traffic light junction along AMJ.
