Newborn with Down syndrome is found abandoned at Melaka bus stop

MELAKA: A newborn baby boy with Down syndrome was found abandoned inside a cardboard box at a bus stop in front of Surau Batu 5 in Alai.

The infant, weighing 2.7kg and still with his umbilical cord attached, was discovered by the public around 9.20pm on Friday (Sept 26).

He was reported to be in stable condition with no injuries.

Melaka Welfare Department director Halyjah Muhamad said medical checks at Hospital Melaka confirmed the baby has Down syndrome.

The examination was carried out on Saturday (Sept 27).

Melaka police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Dzulkhairi Mukhtar confirmed a report was lodged over the case.

“The location was inspected by the D11 unit (Sexual, Women and Children’s Investigation Division) of the state police headquarters, but no closed-circuit television (CCTV) system is installed nearby,” he said on Saturday.

“So far, no witnesses have come forward,” he added.

He said the case is being investigated under Section 317 of the Penal Code for concealing the birth of a child with intent.
