PETALING JAYA: Malaysia must prioritise the digital industry and green technology to tap into its vast markets and economic potential, says Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong.
The MCA president said the development of both sectors was becoming a key pillar in driving economic growth, with effective efforts needed to strengthen Malaysia’s position.
“MCA, through Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) and Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology (TAR UMT), aspires to nurture more talent and professionals who can meet the needs of the digital economy in terms of innovation and new technologies,” he said during a special address at the Conference on Digital Empowerment in Green Industry Development (Digital City) on Friday (Sept 26).
The conference focused on advancing the nation’s digital economy as well as the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ).
Dr Wee was in Hangzhou, China, to attend the conference, which was held in conjunction with the 4th World Digital Trade Expo (WDTE). The event was officiated by the Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress of China, Wang Dongming.
The expo runs for four days, from Sept 25 to 28.
Earlier, Dr Wee noted that the rapid expansion of the digital industry had become a key driving force in developing the national economy.
China’s digital economy, he said, has contributed more than 40% to the country’s GDP, with the market value of digital product and service imports and exports exceeding RMB1.5 trillion.
He added that Malaysia, which is prioritising the development of the digital economy under the National Digital Plan, is well-positioned to seize valuable opportunities and benefits through its close diplomatic ties with China.
