Solar lamps distributed to help Sandakan residents cope with power outages

SANDAKAN: Sabah MCA has distributed solar lamps to residents in Karamunting affected by frequent power outages, in an effort to ease their daily struggles and improve safety during blackouts.

Sabah MCA treasurer Datuk Chin Kim Hiung, who is also the party’s Karamunting state constituency coordinator, said the team visited the Jalan Mah Kiaw area to hand over the lamps to households most in need.

Chin, who also serves as Batu Sapi MCA parliamentary coordinator, said recent unstable weather coupled with repeated power disruptions had significantly affected daily life for many residents.

“The absence of light at night is not only inconvenient but also raises safety concerns, especially for families with elderly members and young children,” he said in a statement here on Thursday (Sept 25).

The initiative, he added, was carried out with the help of local volunteers to ensure a smooth distribution process.

“The number of solar lamps available was limited, and some families may not have received them this time. I sincerely apologise for that. However, please rest assured that we will continue our efforts to secure more units so that more people can benefit,” he said.

Chin said that while the contribution was modest, it was aimed at reducing the burden on residents and providing them with some peace of mind during outages.

He added that Sabah MCA would continue bringing in more practical support and resources to help the community in the long term.

The solar lamps, he said, could at the very least provide light and enhance safety during prolonged power supply disruptions.
