Anwar to address Timor-Leste parliament, hold talks with Gusmão

DILI: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim began the second day of his official visit to Timor-Leste on Wednesday (Sept 24) with a historic address to the National Parliament here.

Anwar was received by the President of the National Parliament Maria Fernanda Lay at 8.55am for a brief meeting before proceeding to deliver his address at 9am - a rare honour that highlights the growing warmth and confidence in bilateral ties.

At 10am, the Prime Minister will proceed to the Government Palace for a bilateral meeting with his counterpart, Prime Minister Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão.

The session includes the witnessing of memorandum of understanding (MoU) exchanges, followed by a joint press conference at 11am.

A significant economic event is scheduled for 11.30 am, namely the launch of the International Convention Centre (ICC) development project at Dili Port, which is expected to enhance Timor-Leste’s capacity to host major international events.

Anwar is slated to hold an exit press conference at 12.30pm before proceeding to the Presidential Palace for the Presidential Lecture and Award ceremony at 2pm.

During the ceremony in the China Hall, he will be conferred the Grand Collar of the Order of Timor-Leste, the country’s highest honour.

The Prime Minister is expected to depart for Kuala Lumpur at 3.30 pm local time, concluding his two-day official visit -- the first by a Malaysian leader to Timor-Leste in 22 years. - Bernama
