PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has instructed the Human Resources Ministry to process the applications of 15,000 foreign workers immediately, says government spokesman Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil.
“The Prime Minister has requested this. This is so that we can meet labour needs of the relevant sectors and directly support economic activities in our country,” said Fahmi, who is also the Communications Minister, during the weekly post-Cabinet press conference on Wednesday (Aug 5).
On July 24, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the relevant ministries and government agencies had been given one month to resolve the shortage of foreign workers affecting the Indian Muslim restaurant sector.
Anwar said the government recognises the urgent need for restaurant operators to fill labour shortages but stressed that the recruitment process must be properly regulated.
