KUALA LUMPUR: Former housing and local government minister Tan Sri Ong Ka Ting and Public Bank Bhd managing director and chief executive officer Tan Sri Tay Ah Lek have been conferred honorary doctorates of philosophy by the Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology (TAR UMT).

Held in conjunction with the university’s convocation ceremony on Saturday (Sept 20), Ong was conferred the Honorary Doctorate of Philosophy in Economics while Tay was conferred the Honorary Doctorate of Philosophy in Business.

Ong was recognised for his leadership, steadfast dedication and significant contributions to the development of the then Tunku Abdul Rahman College (now TAR UMT) and Malaysia’s economic and social development.

In his acceptance speech, Ong said this honour was especially meaningful as he was once a pre-university student here as well.

“To stand here today, as TAR UMT confers this recognition upon me, truly feels like I am coming home,” said Ong, who was the former TAR College chairman from 2004 to 2011.

Equally important, he said, is how TAR College - now TAR UMT - has been true to its mission of providing affordable and quality education.

“For countless young Malaysians from financially challenged families, this institution was the gateway to a brighter future, breaking the chains of poverty and opening doors to new opportunities,” said the former MCA president.

Tay meanwhile said he accepted the honorary doctorate not only for himself but on behalf of his colleagues and mentors along his journey in banking and nation building.

He also paid tribute to his Public Bank founder Tan Sri Teh Hong Piow, whom he described as his lifetime mentor.

“I often reflect on what it means to have the right mentor. Mentorship is not simply about guidance, but inspiration, trust and belief.

“The world is truly at your feet, once you find the right mentor and that chemistry exists.

“I was blessed beyond measure to have that bond as the lessons he imparted continue to guide me, and the opportunities he entrusted me continue to inspire me until today,” he said.

In expressing his heartfelt appreciation to TAR UMT, Tay said he is proud to be associated with the university and witness it shaping a Malaysian workforce that aspires for excellence.
