Melaka college ops assistant fined RM10,000 for accepting RM5,000 bribe


MELAKA: A 42-year-old former operations assistant of a higher learning institution was fined RM10,000 by the Sessions Court in Ayer Keroh after accepting a bribe of RM5,000.

The bribe was a reward for certifying repair works worth RM484,580.

Judge Elesabet Paya Wan meted out the sentence on Thursday (Sept 18) after the accused, Mohd Rizuan Muhamad, pleaded guilty to two alternative charges.

According to the charge sheets, the accused, then a civil servant serving as an Operations Assistant (N11) and acting in the capacity of a Skills Assistant (H19) at Kolej Matrikulasi Melaka, had accepted RM5,000 from a 43-year-old individual.

The money was given as an inducement to certify the completion of repair works on door frames and windows at the institution, valued at RM484,580.

The offences were committed in the Kampung Padang and Pokok Mangga in the Melaka Tengah district on Aug 15 and Sept 28, 2022.

If convicted under Section 161 of the Penal Code, the accused faced a maximum sentence of three years’ imprisonment, a fine, or both.

Deputy Public Prosecutor from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), Sharina Farhana Nor Sa’ari prosecuted.

The accused was represented by lawyer Alif Ahmad Tarmizi.
