Cops nab man over Shah Alam smoking row involving pregnant woman

SHAH ALAM: The man, who allegedly smoked near a pregnant woman at a restaurant here and got into a scuffle with her husband, has been detained.

Shah Alam OCPD Asst Comm Mohd Iqbal Ibrahim said the 49-year-old man was detained at Seksyen 9 here     shortly after he returned from a motorcycle ride trip to Thailand.

"We will be applying for him to be remanded," he said when contacted on Thursday (Sept 18).

According to police, the suspect, who works as a mechanic,  has no prior criminal record, and a urine test came back negative for drugs.

It was reported that a scuffle ensued after a man allegedly smoked near a pregnant woman at a restaurant here.

ACP Mohd Iqbal had said that the incident was reported on Sept 12 after a video of the fight in Seksyen 13 was uploaded online.

"The complainant, who is pregnant, was uneasy after the suspect was smoking in the restaurant as she was worried about her health and the health of her unborn child. Her husband and herself then asked a worker to ask the suspect to stop but the man ignored their concerns.

"The husband then advised the man to stop multiple times but the suspect still refused to do so. This then led to the confrontation.

"The complainant claimed that the suspect then blew smoke towards them which led to a fight between him and her husband," he said.

The resulting scuffle led to pushing between the suspect and the complainant's husband.

"The smoker then left the restaurant. The police have investigated the area and obtained CCTV footage of the incident.

"At the time of the fight there were many witnesses at the restaurant," he said, adding that the suspect has been identified.

Investigations are underway with the case being investigated under Section 323 of the Penal Code.
