Malaysia Day a chance to renew pledge for a better country for all, says Azalina

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia Day is an opportunity for all of us to renew our pledge to build a Malaysia that is fair, inclusive and prosperous for all, says Datuk Seri Azalina Othman.

In a message in conjunction with Malaysia Day Tuesday (Sept 16), the Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reforms) further said that all Malaysians should pause for a moment on this day to "reflect how far we have come".

"Malaysia Day is a sacred reminder of the day our federation was born - a promise forged on Sept 16, 1963, when Sabah, Sarawak, and Malaya united as one nation. It is not merely a historical milestone but a living covenant of trust, respect, and shared destiny.

"For me, Malaysia Day symbolises the strength of our diversity and the unity that sustains us. It calls us to honour every culture, tradition, and language that enriches our national fabric, while standing firm on the principles of justice, integrity, and compassion. In the spirit of Malaysia Madani, it is a moment to reflect on how far we have come, and to renew our pledge to build a Malaysia that is fair, inclusive, and prosperous for all," said Azalina.

She also proposed that Malaysia Day be the day to highlight our collective commitment to transparency, accountability, and reforms that uphold the rule of law.

"These are values that bind our federation. Encourage community participation, support neighbourhood-level activities such as volunteer drives, tree plantings, or unity walks. This will enable all to experience Malaysia Day not only as a national parade, but as a heartfelt celebration within every community.

"As Tunku Abdul Rahman once said, ‘Our future depends on how well many different kinds of people can live and work together’. Malaysia Day is our annual pledge to keep that vision alive"," said Azalina.
