Two more killed in Papar landslides, death toll rises to four

KOTA KINABALU: Two people were killed in Papar on Monday (Sept 15) after landslides triggered by continuous rain struck three homes in Kg Mook.

The Fire and Rescue Department said a distress call was received at 10.02am.

The call reported that the landslide had buried three houses in the village, which is about 35km from the station.

A nine-member team, comprising firefighters from Papar and the Special Tactical Operation and Rescue Team of Malaysia (STORM), was deployed to the scene.

They arrived at 10.48am and launched search and rescue operations.

Two victims were found buried under the rubble and were pronounced dead at the site by health personnel.

Their identities have yet to be confirmed. Firemen were still monitoring the area.

The two deaths mark the latest in a series of fatal incidents linked to relentless downpours in Sabah over the past week.

Earlier at around 10am on Monday (Sept 15), a landslide in Kg Cenderawasih claimed another life.

Last Friday (Sept 12), a 97-year-old man was buried after his house was hit by landslide in Kg Sarapung, Penampang.

This brings the death toll from rain-related landslides in the state to four within just a few days.

Authorities have urged residents, particularly those in high-risk slope areas, to remain alert as rain continues to lash parts of Sabah.
