Ex-headmaster charged with threatening pathologist

KOTA KINABALU: A retired headmaster pleaded not guilty to a charge of making a threatening statement on Facebook against a Hospital Queen Elizabeth I pathologist.

Kamul Kamarudin, 61, was accused of using the Facebook profile “Amung Kamaruddin” to post a statement on Sept 4 that suggested spying on the doctor’s whereabouts and hiring a driver for a hit-and-run.

The statement was read by pathologist Dr Jessie Hiu on Sept 5 at her home here.

Allegedly committed with intent to harass the victim, the offence falls under Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which carries a maximum fine of RM500,000 or up to two years’ jail, or both, if convicted.

The court may also impose a further fine of RM5,000 for each day the offence continues.

Defence lawyer Elhanan James asked the court to consider Kamul’s age, health conditions and caregiving responsibilities for his ill siblings.

The court was also told that it was Kamul’s first offence and that he had cooperated with police since his arrest on Sept 8.

Sessions Court judge Marlina Ibrahim granted bail at RM20,000 with two local sureties and ordered Kamul to report to the police once a month until the case is concluded.

She fixed next mention for Sept 29.
