KUALA LUMPUR: We will investigate what happened in Kampung Sungai Baru during the eviction, as provided under the law, says Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
The Umno president also stated that the scuffle, which resulted in the Dang Wangi OCPD Assistant Commissioner Sulizmie Affendy Sulaiman being injured, should not have occurred.
He was speaking to the media after the Global Islamic Financial Summit held here on Thursday (Sept 11).
“The eviction was done after notices were issued a long time ago. I will ask the Titiwangsa MP, Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani, to investigate this issue as soon as possible.
“Even though Umno had agreed to hold a convention on the proposed Urban Renewal Act, we will take the necessary actions allowed under the laws (to handle the Kampung Sungai Baru incident)
“There should not have been violence during the eviction process, which caused the Dang Wangi OCPD to be hurt. I also sympathise with the victims,” said Ahmad Zahid.
Earlier on Thursday, tensions were running high in Kampung Sungai Baru, Kampung Baru, as police blocked off entry points and told the remaining families to leave their homes by noon.
ACP Sulizmie sustained a head injury believed to be caused by a rock thrown by an unidentified individual while authorities conducted a court-ordered operation to disconnect the electricity supply and demolish several homes in the area.
The eviction follows years of dispute over a redevelopment project first proposed in 2016 to replace the village’s PKNS flats and terrace houses with a high-rise mixed development. While most flat dwellers agreed to the plan, several terrace house owners opposed it, leading to delays.
The developer eventually invoked the Land Acquisition Act 1960 to acquire the land.
